Should You Upgrade Sapphire Preferred to Reserve in 2026?

Should You Upgrade Sapphire Preferred to Reserve in 2026?

Upgrade from the Chase Sapphire Preferred to the Sapphire Reserve only if you’ll use enough of the Reserve’s credits and lounge access to cover a $700 difference in annual fees ($795 vs. $95). The $300 travel credit, which most travelers use without trying, closes that to $400. The rest has to come from credits you’d otherwise pay for, lounge visits, and the Reserve’s higher rates on travel. Also check whether you could apply for the Reserve as a new card instead. An upgrade doesn’t earn a welcome bonus.

The Reserve earns less than the Preferred on gas, streaming and online groceries. If those are big categories for you, upgrading can lower your earnings.

What the Reserve’s credits are worth to you #

Beyond the $300 travel credit, Chase lists several others for the Reserve, including:

  • $500 for stays booked through The Edit, Chase’s hotel collection (up to $250 per booking)
  • $300 dining credit at Sapphire Exclusive Tables restaurants, booked through OpenTable
  • $250 for select Chase Travel hotels, through December 31, 2026
  • $120 Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or NEXUS credit every four years
  • DashPass membership and Apple TV and Apple Music subscriptions included

Value each at what you’d have spent anyway. Someone who books one qualifying Edit stay a year and eats at a couple of the dining partners might honestly count $500 or more beyond the travel credit. Someone who doesn’t use those hotels or restaurants counts them near zero, and for that person the Reserve costs $400 more than the Preferred every year.

How much do lounges and protections add? #

Lounges. Priority Pass and Chase’s Sapphire Lounges, with up to two guests at each and $27 for each extra Priority Pass guest. If you’d otherwise buy lounge passes or airport meals for a family several times a year, this can cover a lot of the gap. Our Priority Pass guest rules explain the fine print.

Trip delay. The Reserve covers delays of more than 6 hours or requiring an overnight stay, up to $500 per covered traveler.

What are Chase points worth in 2026? #

Chase changed its redemption rules in 2025. On the Reserve, points are worth 1 cent each in Chase Travel, and Points Boost offers raise that to up to 2x on select flights and hotels. Points earned under the old fixed rates got a transition period, so check your account for how your existing points are treated. Both cards transfer to Chase’s airline and hotel partners at 1:1, which is often the best use of the points either way. More in the best way to redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

Should you upgrade or apply for the Reserve? #

This used to be simple: Chase limited Sapphire bonuses across both cards. Chase’s current application language for the Preferred is per card. The card is unavailable if you currently have it open, and the bonus may not be available if you previously held it or earned its bonus. If the Reserve’s terms read the same way, a Preferred cardholder who has never had the Reserve may be able to apply for it as a new card, earn its welcome bonus, and hold both. Chase decides eligibility, and it may tell you during the application if you won’t receive the bonus.

An upgrade (product change) keeps your account history but earns no bonus. With a 100,000-point offer on the table, applying is often worth far more, provided you’re under Chase’s 5/24 limit and can meet the spending requirement. Can you get a sign-up bonus on the same card twice covers how issuers handle repeat bonuses.

How to upgrade if you decide to #

  1. Wait until the Preferred has been open at least a year. Federal rules restrict fee increases in an account’s first year, and Chase generally won’t product change a card sooner.
  2. Call Chase or use secure messaging and ask for a product change to the Sapphire Reserve.
  3. Ask about your credit line. The Reserve may need a higher limit. If yours is low, ask whether Chase can move limit from another Chase card.
  4. Ask how the fees are prorated and when the $795 will post.
  5. Keep your points in place. They move with the account.

A product change is generally not a new application, so it doesn’t usually add a hard inquiry. See does product changing a credit card affect your credit score.

Keep score after you upgrade #

A $795 card only pays off if you keep using the credits. Credit Card Central tracks the Reserve’s monthly, semiannual and annual credits in one Credits and Perks screen, marks them used each period and reminds you before they expire. When the fee comes due, you see what you actually captured that year next to it, with reminders 30, 7 and 1 day out, and you can log whether you kept the card, got a retention offer, or downgraded. Its preset library fills in the card’s fee and credits when you add it.

Frequently asked questions #

Will upgrading to the Sapphire Reserve hurt my credit score? #

A product change usually doesn’t involve a hard inquiry, and your account’s open date and history stay the same. Asking for a credit limit increase to make the upgrade possible can involve a credit check.

Do my points move when I upgrade? #

Yes. Points stay with the account through a product change. How they redeem in Chase Travel follows the Reserve’s current rules, including Points Boost.

Can I hold both the Sapphire Preferred and the Sapphire Reserve? #

Under Chase’s current per-card application language, holding both appears possible. Check the terms on the application page, and watch for any message during the application about bonus eligibility.

Can I downgrade back to the Preferred later? #

Usually, yes, though issuers commonly want an account to go a year between product changes. Ask Chase what applies to your account before you upgrade.
